NAIROBI — Somali presidential candidate Abdirahman Mohamed Abdi Hashi has said that Somalia could move towards full self-sufficiency in the coming years if the country is steered by transparent and accountable leadership.
Hashi, an economist and former Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources as well as Minister of Finance, made the remarks during a recent meeting in which he highlighted the role of good governance in strengthening state institutions and rebuilding the economy.
He argued that Somalia has the natural resources and human potential necessary for sustained growth, but stressed that progress depends on leaders who prioritise national interests and maintain high standards of integrity.
“Somalia can become self-reliant across all sectors if it is led by committed and trustworthy leaders,” he said, adding that meaningful change is achievable with the right leadership and political will.
Hashi’s comments come as Somalia approaches a pivotal election period, with debates over governance, security, and economic reforms gaining momentum nationwide.
Somali scholars based in Kenya have voiced strong confidence in presidential candidate Abdirahman Mohamed Abdi Hashi, describing him as an economist capable of leading the country and rescuing its struggling population.
Speaking after a meeting between Hashi and members of the Somali diaspora community in Nairobi, the scholars said Hashi possesses the leadership qualities and economic expertise needed to steer Somalia towards stability and improved livelihoods.
“Mr. Hashi is a senior economist who can lead the nation and lift its people out of hardship,” they also said, praising the candidate’s vision and experience.
