The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, has officially welcomed Somalia’s new Permanent Representative to the Agency, Ambassador Khadra Duale. Somalia, which recently became a member of the IAEA, is expected to benefit from extensive cooperation aimed at promoting the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology.

Ambassador Duale’s accreditation marks a significant step for Somalia as it seeks to harness nuclear applications in healthcare, food security, and environmental protection. Grossi emphasized that the IAEA is committed to supporting Somalia’s development goals through its global initiatives.
Somalia is expected to participate in several key IAEA programs, including:
- Rays of Hope – Strengthening cancer care and nuclear medicine services in developing countries, providing Somalia with vital support to address the growing burden of cancer.
- Atoms4Food – A joint IAEA and FAO initiative designed to improve agricultural productivity, enhance food safety, and ensure food security through the application of nuclear and isotopic techniques.
- NUTEC Plastics – A global effort to reduce plastic pollution using innovative nuclear-based solutions, contributing to environmental protection.
If fully implemented, these programs could open new opportunities for Somalia in public health, food production, and environmental sustainability. Cooperation with the IAEA also reflects Somalia’s commitment to international scientific partnerships and modern technology adoption to address pressing national challenges.
