MOGADISHU, (HAN) – Ramla Ahmed Said Ali, the trailblazing Somali boxer who became the first Somali woman to win an international gold medal, returned to Mogadishu on Sunday to a hero’s welcome after her latest victories in the boxing ring.

Crowds of enthusiastic supporters, government officials, and community members gathered at Aden Adde International Airport to celebrate Ali’s achievements, which have placed Somalia on the global sporting map.

Somalia’s Minister of Family and Human Rights, Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, described Ali’s success as a historic moment for the country.
“Ramla Ali has raised our flag high in the world of sports. She has become a role model for Somali girls everywhere, showing them that with determination, they can compete and win at the highest levels. Today, we are proud to welcome her back to her homeland,” the minister said.

Also present at the ceremony was Abdiasis Osman, Deputy Governor of Banadir Region for Social Affairs, who applauded Ali’s determination.
“Her victories have proven that Somali women possess resilience, courage, and the ability to excel in international arenas. She is an inspiration for the younger generation,” Osman stated.

Speaking to reporters shortly after her arrival, Ali expressed her gratitude to the Somali people for their warm reception.
“I am honored and deeply moved by the love and support I have received today. This victory is not mine alone—it belongs to the entire Somali nation. I hope my journey inspires others to follow their dreams regardless of challenges,” she said.

Ali’s triumphs are not only sporting milestones but also symbols of progress for Somali women in athletics, a field where cultural barriers and conflict have long limited participation. Her return has sparked a wave of national pride and renewed hope for Somalia’s place in global sports.
