BEIJING — China has reaffirmed its strong support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, pledging to deepen cooperation with the Horn of Africa nation in defense, security, and economic development.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the remarks during a telephone conversation with Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdisalam Dhaay, according to a statement released by Somali officials.

Wang said China firmly supports the Federal Republic of Somalia’s independence and national unity, stressing Beijing’s opposition to any actions that undermine Somalia’s territorial integrity. He specifically criticized efforts by Somaliland authorities to engage in cooperation with Taiwan, saying such moves violate the sovereignty of both Somalia and China.

China considers Taiwan a part of its territory under the “One China” policy and opposes any form of official engagement between Taiwan and foreign governments or regions it views as separatist.

Wang said China would continue strengthening its strategic partnership with Somalia regardless of changes in the international landscape, with a particular focus on defense cooperation, security assistance, and economic development initiatives.

During the call, Wang also extended a formal invitation to Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to attend the upcoming China–Arab States Summit, scheduled to be held in China. He praised Somalia’s role as the rotating president of the United Nations Security Council for the month of January, describing it as a reflection of the country’s growing diplomatic engagement.

Somalia, for its part, welcomed China’s continued support. Foreign Minister Dhaay expressed appreciation for Beijing’s longstanding backing of Somalia’s sovereignty and its assistance in the fight against terrorism.

Dhaay reaffirmed Somalia’s full commitment to the “One China” principle and said the Somali government is ready to further deepen bilateral relations with China to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Horn of Africa region.

China and Somalia established diplomatic relations in 1960 and have maintained close ties in political, economic, and development cooperation over the decades.
