MOGADISHU — The international community, led by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS), has welcomed the Federal Government of Somalia’s announcement of a National Consultative Forum and its invitation to the Somali Future Council, urging opposition groups to take part in the talks.
In a statement released by UNTMIS, the mission described the proposed forum as a critical opportunity to strengthen inclusive political dialogue and to reach broad-based consensus on the country’s electoral process. The talks are seen as particularly important as Somalia approaches the end of key constitutional timelines in the coming months.
The international community emphasized that the consultative platform could help pave the way for elections that are inclusive, transparent, and accepted by all stakeholders, helping to avoid political uncertainty and instability.
UNTMIS reaffirmed its continued support for an inclusive and Somali-led political process, calling on the Somali Future Council to respond positively to the government’s invitation and to engage constructively in the national discussions.
The statement also urged all Somali political actors — including the federal government, opposition groups, and other stakeholders — to participate in the upcoming dialogue in a responsible and meaningful manner. According to the UN mission, constructive engagement is essential to achieving a national agreement based on consultation and compromise.
The international community stressed that such an agreement would be key to advancing long-term stability, development, and sustainable prosperity in Somalia, a country that has faced decades of conflict, political fragmentation, and security challenges.
