MADRID — Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Tuesday that Spain has formally declined an invitation to join a peace council established by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Sánchez said Spain’s decision was based on two main reasons: the absence of the Palestinian Authority from the council and the fact that the initiative operates outside the framework of the United Nations.

He stressed that any decision regarding the future of Palestine must be made by the Palestinian people themselves, emphasizing Spain’s long-standing support for international law and multilateral diplomacy.

The Trump-backed council had extended an official invitation to Spain to participate, but the Spanish government chose not to take part, citing concerns over legitimacy and representation.

The council has already attracted several early members, including a number of Muslim-majority countries, according to observers.
