In a significant diplomatic development, U.S. President Donald Trump has held a high-level phone conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the escalating situation involving Iran, according to sources familiar with the matter and officials briefed on the call.
The discussion focused on growing regional security concerns, particularly tensions linked to Iran, as well as the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz — a vital maritime corridor through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes. Energy analysts and maritime security experts warn that any disruption in the waterway could trigger sharp increases in global oil prices and disrupt international trade.
According to a senior U.S. administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly comment, both leaders emphasized the need to ensure stability in the Gulf region and to maintain the free flow of energy resources. India’s Ministry of External Affairs, in a brief statement cited by regional media, said Prime Minister Modi reiterated the importance of de-escalation and dialogue, stressing that stability in the Gulf is critical for global economic security. India relies heavily on oil imports that pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
