MOGADISHU – Somalia on Wednesday welcomed the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, calling it a key step toward reducing tensions and promoting regional and global stability.
In a statement from Mogadishu, the Federal Government said that, as a United Nations Security Council member, it views the ceasefire as a timely move for de-escalation, confidence-building, and the preservation of peace.
The government praised the U.S. for its leadership in fostering restraint and dialogue and acknowledged Iran’s role in supporting diplomatic efforts. It also thanked Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Egypt for their mediation, noting their contributions were vital in reaching the agreement.
Highlighting Somalia’s strategic position along the Red Sea and near major Gulf shipping routes, the statement stressed the importance of implementing the ceasefire and maintaining structured dialogue toward a comprehensive, lasting resolution.
“The security of maritime routes and the uninterrupted flow of international trade remain vital to regional stability and global economic resilience,” it said.
Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful conflict resolution and respect for sovereignty, Somalia stressed adherence to the United Nations Charter, including the peaceful settlement of disputes.
The government emphasized that the ceasefire is a foundation for lasting peace built on dialogue, mutual respect, and shared responsibility, and confirmed its readiness to support international efforts to consolidate peace, reduce tensions, and promote regional stability.
