MOGADISHU — Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has said Somalia’s survival, stability and statehood depend on a strong and capable national army, warning that “without the military, society cannot exist.”

Speaking at a ceremony marking the 66th anniversary of the founding of the Somali National Army, Hamza underscored the central role of the armed forces in safeguarding national sovereignty, protecting citizens, and preserving unity in a country still facing persistent security threats.

The prime minister said concepts such as national pride, dignity and independence are only meaningful when backed by effective military institutions. He noted that in today’s global environment, military strength remains a decisive factor in protecting national interests and ensuring political stability.

Hamza warned that Somalia continues to face serious security challenges that could undermine state authority if not addressed by a well-organised and properly equipped defence force. He said building a professional army remains a top government priority.

He pledged continued investment in training, recruitment, and modern equipment for the Somali Armed Forces, stressing that reforms are underway to improve discipline, operational capacity, and coordination among security institutions.

The prime minister also commended Somali security forces for their ongoing operations against armed groups opposed to the government, urging them to maintain momentum in efforts to secure liberated areas and expand state control.

He called on the army to remain committed to protecting the country’s territorial integrity and supporting long-term peacebuilding and reconciliation efforts across Somalia.
