BISHKEK — Somalia’s ambassador to Turkey, Fathudin Ali, has formally presented his credentials to Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, taking up his new role as Somalia’s non-resident ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, officials said.

The credential ceremony, held at the presidential palace in Bishkek, is a key diplomatic formality that grants the envoy full authority to represent Somalia in the Central Asian country.

Ali, who is based in Ankara, will serve in a non-resident capacity, a common arrangement for countries seeking to expand diplomatic representation while managing limited resources. His appointment is seen as part of Somalia’s broader push to widen its international engagement and strengthen ties beyond its traditional partners in Africa and the Middle East.

During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on enhancing bilateral cooperation, with a focus on areas including trade, education, cultural exchange and investment opportunities. Officials said both Somalia and Kyrgyzstan expressed interest in exploring new avenues of collaboration, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure development and capacity building.

Somalia’s foreign ministry has in recent years prioritized increasing its diplomatic footprint, reopening embassies and appointing envoys to new regions as the country continues efforts to rebuild institutions after decades of conflict and instability.

Analysts say expanding diplomatic relations with countries like Kyrgyzstan could help Somalia diversify its partnerships, attract investment and strengthen its voice in international forums.

Ali’s accreditation comes amid renewed efforts by Mogadishu to position itself more actively on the global stage, while seeking economic opportunities and political cooperation to support its ongoing state-building process.

Since taking office as Somalia’s ambassador to Turkey, Ali has been credited with advancing diplomatic engagement and strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
