JUBA — The African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) has conducted a working visit to South Sudan as part of ongoing regional efforts to assess the country’s political and security situation ahead of planned national elections.

The delegation’s mission comes at a critical time for South Sudan, which continues to navigate a fragile peace process following years of internal conflict, political tensions, and humanitarian challenges since gaining independence in 2011.

According to the African Union, the visit is intended to strengthen dialogue with national authorities and support efforts aimed at ensuring a peaceful, inclusive, and credible electoral process. The council is also expected to review progress on key peace agreement provisions, including security sector reforms and reconciliation initiatives.

During the visit in the capital Juba, the AU delegation is scheduled to hold high-level meetings with government officials, representatives of political parties, and other stakeholders. Discussions are expected to focus on election preparedness, security arrangements, and mechanisms to prevent renewed conflict during the electoral period.

Somalia, a member of the Peace and Security Council, took part in the mission. Somalia’s ambassador to Addis Ababa, Abdullahi Warfaa, confirmed the participation in a post shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), highlighting Somalia’s continued engagement in regional peace and security matters.

The African Union has increased its involvement in South Sudan in recent years, working closely with regional blocs and international partners to support the implementation of peace agreements and encourage political stability.

Observers say the success of the upcoming elections will be a key test for South Sudan’s fragile peace process, as the country seeks to transition from prolonged conflict to long-term stability and democratic governance.
