Merca, Somalia– Fierce fighting has broken out in parts of Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region, where government forces are engaged in heavy clashes with the militant group Al-Shabaab.

The fighting is concentrated in the areas of Sabiid Caanoole, Bariire, Awdheegle, and surrounding villages, where airstrikes and heavy artillery shelling have been reported.

These attacks have had a severe impact on civilians living in the affected areas. Reports indicate significant casualties and damage to property among the local population.

Professor Mohamed Omar Dalha, a prominent Somali scholar, said that civilians remain the primary victims of the ongoing conflict in the region. He noted that the situation remains tense and stressed the urgent need to protect civilians from the violence.

Professor Dalha also highlighted conflicting directives issued by the Lower Shabelle regional administration and the military command. The regional administration has urged residents to return to their homes, while military officials have warned that the area is still an active combat zone and general security cannot be guaranteed.

“I call on civilians to exercise extra caution and stay away from areas where military operations are ongoing,” said Prof. Dalha.

The situation remains volatile, with fears that the fighting could spread further unless an urgent solution is found to protect civilians. The Federal Government of Somalia has not yet issued an official statement regarding the contradictory orders from the regional administration and military command.
