Türkiye Expands Mining Partnerships in Africa as Somalia Seeks Support for Mineral Development

0

MOGADISHU — Türkiye is increasing its involvement in Africa’s mineral sector, with Somalia seeking Turkish support to help develop its significant uranium and critical mineral resources.

Somalia is believed to possess substantial deposits of uranium and other strategic minerals, including lithium, copper, titanium, gold and rare earth elements, which are increasingly important for global energy transition technologies and industrial development.

The growing cooperation reflects an expansion of Türkiye’s engagement in Somalia beyond traditional sectors such as infrastructure, security, trade, and energy. Officials from both countries are revisiting a 2016 cooperation agreement focused on geological mapping, mineral exploration and technical collaboration.

The move comes as African countries seek greater investment and expertise to unlock the economic potential of their natural resources while strengthening domestic mining capacity.

Türkiye has also broadened its mineral cooperation elsewhere on the continent. Nigeria recently signed a mining cooperation agreement with Ankara aimed at enhancing mineral exploration, knowledge transfer and technological capabilities within the sector.

Analysts say the partnerships could help African nations attract investment, improve geological surveys and advance efforts to develop critical minerals needed for global industries, including renewable energy, electronics and advanced manufacturing.

Note: Claims about the exact size of Somalia’s uranium and mineral reserves should be presented cautiously, as estimates vary and many deposits still require extensive exploration and verification.
