Somalia launches Campaign to collect illegal weapons

MOGADISHU — The Somali government has launched an expanded campaign to collect and centralize illegal weapons held in private homes, officials said.

The initiative is part of efforts to strengthen state control over arms and improve national security.

Authorities said the campaign targets firearms kept in civilian households without legal authorization for many years.

Security forces have already begun collecting weapons in parts of the capital Mogadishu.

The recovered arms are being transported to designated government storage facilities.

Officials said the depots have been reinforced with security systems to ensure safe handling.

They added that strict procedures are in place to prevent theft or diversion of the weapons.

The government said the initiative is aimed at restoring the state’s monopoly over the use of force.

Authorities warned that the widespread presence of unregulated weapons remains a major security concern.

They said such weapons contribute to criminal activity and instability in several regions of the country.

The campaign will initially focus on Mogadishu before being extended to other federal member states.

Security officials said the rollout will be carried out in phases across the country.

Authorities said security forces have been instructed to conduct coordinated collection and registration operations.

They added that each recovered weapon will be verified for its legal status where possible.

The Ministry of Security is working with regional administrations on the implementation of the program.

Community leaders have also been engaged to support voluntary surrender of illegal arms.

Officials said public awareness campaigns are underway to encourage cooperation from residents.

The government reiterated that only licensed security personnel are permitted to carry military-grade weapons.

Civilians remain prohibited from storing such weapons in their homes, authorities stressed.

Officials concluded by reaffirming their commitment to strengthening the rule of law and improving long-term stability across Somalia.
