MOGADISHU — Somali security forces in the capital Mogadishu have launched the third phase of a broader security operation aimed at strengthening public safety and consolidating state authority across the city’s districts, an official said on Saturday.
Senior security official Moalim Mahdi made the announcement during a briefing with local media and security coordinators in Mogadishu.
He said the operation is being implemented jointly by different branches of the security agencies working in close coordination.
According to him, the campaign is part of an ongoing national effort to improve stability in the capital and surrounding areas.
“The security forces of Mogadishu have begun the third phase of the operation,” Mahdi said.
He added that the operation would continue until its stated objectives are fully achieved.
Officials did not immediately disclose how long the third phase is expected to last.
However, they noted that earlier phases of similar security operations had contributed to improvements in safety in several parts of the city.
The current phase is expected to prioritize strengthening security presence in key neighborhoods and addressing remaining security threats.
Security sources said the operation includes increased patrols, inspections, and targeted enforcement activities.
Authorities have repeatedly said such measures are necessary to maintain order in a city that has faced years of insecurity linked to armed groups and criminal activity.
Residents in Mogadishu have often experienced fluctuating security conditions due to sporadic violent incidents.
Officials say the new phase is intended to build on previous stabilization efforts carried out across the capital.
They also urged residents to cooperate with security personnel during the course of the operation.
Community leaders have been encouraged to support the initiative and to help report any suspicious activities in their areas.
Mahdi expressed confidence that the operation would achieve its intended goals.
He said the campaign would conclude “with success and dignity,” reflecting optimism within the security leadership.
The federal government has in recent years intensified efforts to improve security and extend state control in urban centers.
Mogadishu remains the central focus of these efforts due to its political, economic, and strategic importance.
Authorities have not yet released specific details about arrests, seizures, or incidents linked to the start of the third phase.
Security analysts say such phased operations are typically part of longer-term stabilization strategies aimed at restoring public confidence and reducing threats.
Officials are expected to provide further updates as the operation progresses in the coming days and weeks.
