Somali opposition faces internal tensions amid postponed meetings

MOGADISHU – Somalia’s opposition alliance is facing internal disagreements and growing mistrust, according to political sources in the capital.

Planned meetings scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, Thursday night and Friday morning were postponed without official explanation.

However, a new meeting is expected to take place on Friday evening as leaders attempt to bridge emerging differences.

The developments come at a sensitive political moment in Somalia, where opposition groups have been trying to coordinate their strategy ahead of key political engagements.

Overnight, a high-level meeting was held between former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, and MP Abdullahi Mohamed Ali, also known as Sanbaloolshe.

Sources said the meeting focused on recent political tensions and disputes with the government of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

The discussions also reportedly reviewed recent confrontations and the growing political polarization in the country.

According to informed sources, there are increasing but unpublicized disagreements within the opposition camp.

These disagreements are said to be largely expressed through informal channels and political rumors rather than official statements.

One faction based in Mogadishu areas known locally as Siigaale and Mirinaayo believes some allies were absent during critical moments of political tension.

They argue that support was insufficient when pressure on the opposition was at its peak.

Meanwhile, members of another faction, reportedly based outside the capital, have complained of being excluded from key decision-making processes.

They say they often learn of important developments through social media rather than internal briefings.

Reports circulating online have suggested disagreements over the coordination and movement of key opposition figures.

Some posts claimed that Khaire and Sheikh Sharif have been shifting between different political camps, although these claims remain unverified.

There are also differing views within the opposition regarding engagement with former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo.

Some members have expressed concern about any perceived rapprochement with the former leader.

A joint press conference recently held by Farmaajo and Sheikh Sharif has further intensified internal debate within opposition ranks.

Observers say the opposition is struggling to maintain unity at a critical time in Somalia’s political calendar.

Despite the internal tensions, opposition leaders are still expected to meet later on Friday in an effort to resolve differences.

The outcome of the planned talks could determine the future direction and cohesion of the opposition movement in the coming weeks.
