Cairo – Eritrea’s President Isaias Afwerki arrived in Cairo on Sunday for a three-day state visit aimed at strengthening ties with Egypt amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.

The visit, confirmed by Eritrea’s Ministry of Information, follows an official invitation from Egyptian authorities. Afwerki is expected to hold high-level talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi at the presidential palace.

According to officials, the discussions will focus on expanding bilateral cooperation and coordinating positions on regional and international issues. Security developments in the Horn of Africa and instability affecting parts of the region are expected to feature prominently.

The strategic importance of the Red Sea is also expected to dominate the agenda, particularly concerns over maritime security, migration flows, and anti-smuggling operations along one of the world’s key shipping routes.

Both Cairo and Asmara have been seeking to deepen diplomatic and security coordination as shifting alliances reshape the region. Analysts say Egypt has intensified its engagement in the Horn of Africa, while Eritrea has expanded its regional partnerships.

Economic cooperation, including trade, infrastructure development, and energy connectivity, is also expected to be reviewed during the talks. Officials from both sides may explore new frameworks for investment and joint projects.

The Eritrean leader is accompanied by senior officials, though details of the delegation have not been disclosed. Egyptian state media is expected to cover the meetings, with a joint statement anticipated at the end of the visit.

While no agreements have yet been announced, diplomatic sources say the talks could produce memoranda of understanding aimed at formalising closer cooperation between the two countries.
