United States — Sahro Rucker, also known as Sahro Somali, has been reunited with her biological father after nearly five decades of searching, following DNA test results that confirmed their family connection.

“I never stopped wondering where I came from,” Sahro said after the confirmation. “For many years I lived with questions that had no answers.”
Sahro, 48, is a Spanish language teacher based in the United States. She has been married for 22 years and is the mother of two children who are currently in university.
For most of her life, she believed she had Latin American roots, a belief shaped in part by limited and conflicting information in her early birth records.
“I grew up thinking my identity was somewhere else,” she explained. “Even my documents were confusing, so I had no clear truth about my origins.”
In 2021, Sahro decided to take a DNA test in an effort to trace her ancestry. The results gradually reshaped her understanding of her identity, pointing instead toward Somali heritage.
Her story later gained attention after she shared it on TikTok, where she publicly said she was searching for her father. The videos went viral, drawing responses from viewers around the world and eventually helping connect her to relatives.
“I posted because I needed help finding the truth,” she said. “I never imagined it would reach so many people.”
In December 2025, further DNA testing confirmed that Mohamud Hussein Hersi is her biological father, officially ending a search that lasted approximately 48 years.
According to family accounts, Mohamud arrived in the United States in 1976 on a work or travel visa, where he met Sahro’s mother. Their relationship led to the birth of a daughter, but circumstances and long-distance separation eventually resulted in the family losing contact.
Speaking after the confirmation, Sahro described the moment as deeply emotional.
“It is a mixture of sadness and joy,” she said. “Sadness for the years we lost, but happiness that I finally know who I am and where I come from.”
