BRUSSELS — UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin has praised Somali international referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, following reports that he was denied entry to the United States ahead of preparations linked to the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Čeferin described Artan as a “highly talented and experienced young referee” who has already established himself at the highest levels of African football under the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

“Artan is a very good referee. Although still young, he already has significant experience and has proven himself at the highest levels of CAF competitions,” Čeferin said. “Football is meant to bring people together, and UEFA wishes to express its respect for Omar and his high-level refereeing career.”

The remarks come amid growing international attention over claims that Artan was denied entry to the United States, a development that has triggered criticism from political and sporting figures across Africa.

NAIROBI — Kenya’s President William Ruto also condemned the reported decision, describing it as a “mistake against the whole of Africa” and a “serious injustice,” according to statements carried by regional media.

MOGADISHU — Separately, Francesca Di Mauro, the European Union’s envoy to Somalia praised Artan’s career, saying missed opportunities should not define his future, and calling Europe a “reliable partner” for African talent and international sporting cooperation.

Artan, regarded as one of Africa’s emerging elite referees, has officiated in several major CAF tournaments and international fixtures, earning recognition for consistency and discipline on the pitch.

The controversy has reignited debate over visa restrictions affecting African sports officials during global tournaments, even as football authorities continue to emphasize inclusivity and international access in the game.
