UNDP Launches New Five-Year Programme to Support Somalia’s Development Goals

MOGADISHU – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Saturday officially launched its new five-year Country Programme Document (CPD) for Somalia, covering the period 2026–2030 and outlining a strategic roadmap aimed at strengthening peace, governance, economic resilience and climate adaptation across the country.

The programme is structured around two main pathways: fostering peace while reducing governance fragility, and addressing economic vulnerability alongside the growing impacts of climate change. UNDP said the framework is fully aligned with Somalia’s National Transformation Plan (NTP) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for 2026–2030.

According to UNDP, the new programme was developed through extensive consultations involving government institutions, civil society organizations, women and youth groups, development partners and the private sector to ensure that national priorities are reflected in the strategy.

The initiative aims to support stronger and more accountable institutions, promote inclusive governance, expand economic opportunities, and enhance resilience to recurring climate shocks that continue to affect millions of Somalis. Somalia remains one of the countries most vulnerable to climate-related disasters, including droughts and floods, which have repeatedly disrupted livelihoods and development gains.

UNDP officials said the programme will place particular emphasis on innovation, digital transformation, human rights, gender equality, and partnerships with local communities to deliver sustainable results. The organization also intends to strengthen collaboration with government institutions and development partners to mobilize resources and accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.

The launch marks the beginning of a new phase of cooperation between UNDP and Somalia as the country seeks to consolidate state-building gains, promote economic growth, and build resilience against both governance and climate-related challenges over the next five years.
