DAMASCUS – Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has clarified remarks on Syria’s potential role in addressing Lebanon’s political and security challenges, stressing that any cooperation would be based on dialogue and support rather than intervention.
His comments came after U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that Syria could play a role in efforts related to Lebanon.
Al-Sharaa said the situation in Lebanon requires collective solutions, adding that Syria could contribute to efforts aimed at establishing a security framework to help stabilize the country.
“The situation in Lebanon today requires joint solutions, and Syria may be able to assist in exploring a security path toward a solution,” he said.
However, he emphasized that such involvement should not be seen as a return to past practices.
“This does not mean war, nor does it mean returning to the era when the former Syrian regime exercised interference and control over Lebanon,” he said.
He added that Syria’s approach focuses on supporting the Lebanese state, strengthening national institutions, and promoting dialogue among political forces, including Hezbollah, to reach an acceptable security arrangement.
The remarks underscore Damascus’ effort to present a cooperative diplomatic role amid Lebanon’s ongoing political and security challenges.
