Mogadishu — Five Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) personnel are feared dead after a military aircraft crash-landed at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu on Wednesday morning. Three others on board were rescued and are receiving medical care.

In a statement, the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) confirmed that the rescued personnel were immediately taken to the AUSSOM Level II hospital in Mogadishu for urgent treatment.

“Search and rescue operations are currently underway to retrieve the remaining crew and passengers,” the statement noted.

The aircraft was flying from the Beledogle military base in the Middle Shabelle region when it crashed just short of the runway. The impact sparked a fire, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky, visible from surrounding areas.

Somali Civil Aviation Authorities have opened an investigation into the cause of the crash as recovery operations continue.
