BAKU — Somalia has been elected to the Executive Committee of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC), marking a diplomatic milestone for the Horn of Africa nation during the organization’s 20th conference in Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku.

A delegation from Somalia’s Lower House of Parliament, led by lawmaker Dr. Mohamed Sheikh Ahmed, participated in the gathering, which brought together parliamentary representatives from member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to discuss sustainable and inclusive economic growth and enhanced inter-parliamentary cooperation.

Addressing the conference, Ahmed highlighted Somalia’s political and security progress and called for stronger cooperation among Islamic nations. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of OIC member states.

The Somali lawmaker also urged the organization to condemn any actions that undermine Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity, reaffirming Mogadishu’s commitment to preserving national sovereignty.

Somalia’s election to the PUIC Executive Committee was welcomed by delegates as a reflection of the country’s growing role within Islamic multilateral institutions and increasing international engagement.

The Executive Committee is one of the union’s principal decision-making bodies, responsible for overseeing the implementation of policies and resolutions adopted by member states.

The conference was attended by Somalia’s ambassador to Azerbaijan, Abdinur Dahir Fidow, alongside parliamentary delegations from across the Islamic world.

Somalia’s successful bid for a seat on the committee comes as the country seeks to expand its diplomatic influence, strengthen relations with Muslim-majority nations and increase its participation in regional and international organizations.

Founded in 1999, the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States serves as a platform for cooperation among the legislatures of Islamic countries, promoting dialogue, coordination and common positions on issues affecting the Muslim world.
