Iran Khamenei funeral draws foreign delegations amid high tensions

TEHRAN — A state funeral for Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has drawn widespread international attention, with several world leaders and senior delegations expected in Tehran amid tight security and high diplomatic sensitivity, according to Iranian state media and officials.

While Iranian authorities have not released a full official guest list, diplomatic sources in Tehran say invitations were extended to a range of countries considered close partners of Iran, particularly in Asia, the Middle East and parts of Africa.

Russia and China are expected to send high-level delegations, reflecting their longstanding strategic and economic ties with Tehran. Several regional governments, including neighbouring states and members of Iran-aligned political blocs, are also expected to be represented through senior officials or foreign ministers rather than heads of state.

Countries such as Iraq and Syria, which maintain close security and political relations with Tehran, are also widely expected to attend at senior level, alongside representatives from allied non-state political movements and regional organisations.

In contrast, most Western governments are not expected to participate at senior level, with diplomatic tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme, regional conflicts, and sanctions shaping attendance decisions. Some European countries may instead send lower-level diplomatic representatives.

The funeral comes at a moment of heightened regional instability, with Iran playing a central role in multiple geopolitical disputes across the Middle East. Security in Tehran has been significantly reinforced, with large-scale deployments expected around major religious and state venues.

Analysts say the composition of foreign delegations is likely to reflect current global geopolitical divisions, with attendance effectively serving as a symbolic measure of Iran’s international alliances and its isolation from Western diplomatic circles.

Authorities say final confirmations are still being processed, and the list of attending leaders is expected to be updated as delegations arrive in Tehran in the coming hours.
