CAIRO — Egypt, Eritrea and Somalia have held high-level discussions on security developments in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region, as regional countries increase diplomatic coordination.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held separate talks with Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh and Somali Foreign Minister Abdulsalam Abdi Ali, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and coordinating positions on regional issues.
Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said the talks covered recent developments in the Horn of Africa, maritime security and efforts to enhance cooperation between the three countries.
Cairo has increasingly described the stability of the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea as closely linked to Egypt’s national security interests, citing the strategic importance of maritime routes and regional stability.
The diplomatic engagement comes amid closer coordination between Egypt and Eritrea, including discussions on regional security and developments in Sudan, where both countries have supported Sudan’s army leadership.
Egypt has also expanded cooperation with Somalia, recently signing agreements aimed at strengthening maritime transport and port cooperation.
The growing alignment among Egypt, Eritrea and Somalia has drawn attention from Ethiopia, which has expressed concerns over what it views as attempts to limit its regional interests, particularly regarding access to the sea.
Regional leaders continue to emphasize diplomacy and cooperation as they navigate rising competition over security, trade routes and influence in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.
