MOGADISHU — The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has launched a new initiative aimed at strengthening women’s participation in peacebuilding, economic empowerment, and community resilience in Somalia.
The Building Women’s Economic Resilience for Sustainable Peace (BWERSP) project was officially launched in Mogadishu on Monday, bringing together representatives from government institutions, women peace committees, civil society organizations, community leaders, and development partners.
IGAD officials said the initiative recognizes women as key actors in promoting peace and stability, particularly in communities affected by conflict and social challenges.
“Investing in women is not simply a matter of equity; it is a strategic investment in Somalia’s peace, stability, and sustainable development,” an official said during the launch event.
The project is supported by the African Development Bank Group through its Transition Support Facility and is designed to increase women’s economic resilience while expanding their role in decision-making and peace processes.
According to IGAD, BWERSP will focus on strengthening women-led peace structures, improving leadership opportunities, and creating pathways for women to contribute more effectively to conflict prevention, reconciliation, and recovery efforts.
The initiative is also expected to support women’s participation in local peace mechanisms and community-based solutions, particularly in areas facing insecurity, displacement, and economic hardship.
IGAD said empowering women economically and politically is essential for building sustainable peace in Somalia, where women have increasingly played roles in mediation, humanitarian response, and community reconciliation despite facing social and security barriers.
The launch comes as Somalia continues efforts to strengthen governance, improve security, and advance social and economic development following decades of conflict.
Officials and partners said the BWERSP project will contribute to national and regional efforts to promote inclusive peacebuilding and ensure women have a greater voice in shaping Somalia’s future.
