MOGADISHU — Former Somali intelligence chief Abdullahi Mohamed Sanbaloolshe has questioned the progress of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s reconciliation agenda, arguing that political divisions remain unresolved despite repeated calls for unity and dialogue.
Sanbaloolshe made the comments while responding to questions about the status of President Hassan Sheikh’s vision of building a “Somalia that is united and reconciled.”
“Instead of reconciling Somalis, even the relationship between him and me, which was once close, has fallen apart,” Sanbaloolshe said, according to remarks reported by Somali media.
His comments highlight the continuing political disagreements surrounding the Somali government’s efforts to build consensus among political leaders, federal member states, and opposition groups.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has made national reconciliation one of the central themes of his administration, emphasizing dialogue, cooperation between political actors, and strengthening relations between the federal government and regional administrations.
However, critics have accused the government of failing to achieve broad political consensus on several key issues, including constitutional amendments, the future electoral system, security arrangements, and the distribution of powers between Mogadishu and federal member states.
Sanbaloolshe, who has served as director of Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) and held senior government positions, has become increasingly vocal on political issues in recent months.
The remarks come at a sensitive time as Somalia prepares for the next phase of its political process, with disagreements continuing between the government and opposition figures over the electoral roadmap and constitutional reforms.
Political analysts say the ability of Somalia’s leaders to reach agreement through dialogue will be crucial for maintaining stability and ensuring a smooth transition ahead of future elections.
The Somali government has not immediately responded to Sanbaloolshe’s criticism. President Hassan Sheikh’s administration has repeatedly said that reconciliation and inclusive politics remain key priorities for the country’s future.
