JUBA — Egypt has completed the establishment of 28 solar-powered groundwater stations across South Sudan, providing clean and reliable drinking water to more than 84,000 people, a senior official from Egypt’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation has announced.
The completed projects form part of Egypt’s wider development cooperation with South Sudan, focusing on improving access to safe water, supporting local communities, and strengthening sustainable resource management in the country.
The stations rely on solar energy to operate groundwater pumping systems, reducing dependence on fuel-powered equipment and providing an environmentally friendly solution for communities in areas where access to clean water has remained a major challenge.
Egyptian officials said the initiative is designed to improve public health, reduce the burden of long-distance water collection, and support social and economic development in South Sudanese communities.
The projects are expected to benefit thousands of families by providing a stable source of drinking water while also creating opportunities for better sanitation, improved livelihoods, and stronger community resilience.
The water stations are part of a series of Egyptian-supported initiatives in South Sudan, including cooperation in water management, irrigation, agriculture, and infrastructure development. Cairo has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to supporting South Sudan’s development priorities and strengthening bilateral ties.
The initiative comes at a time when many African countries are facing increasing pressure on water resources due to climate change, population growth, and limited infrastructure. Solar-powered solutions are increasingly being promoted as a sustainable way to expand access to essential services in remote areas.
Officials said Egypt will continue working with South Sudan to implement projects that contribute to improving living conditions and advancing cooperation between the two neighboring countries.
