MOGADISHU — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has said that whenever Somalia overcomes a challenge or takes a step forward in its political, security, or institutional development, there are individuals and groups who attempt to undermine those achievements.
The president said Somalia has endured decades of difficult challenges, including state collapse, insecurity, political instability, and economic hardship. However, he noted that the country has continued to make progress through efforts aimed at rebuilding state institutions, strengthening national security, and restoring public confidence in government structures.
“Every time Somalia achieves progress or overcomes an obstacle, there are people who do not want the country to move forward. They try to create doubts, weaken public confidence, or challenge the steps being taken,” President Hassan Sheikh said.
The president emphasized that rebuilding a nation after years of conflict is a complex process that requires patience, unity, and cooperation among political leaders and citizens. He said disagreements and criticism are part of any democratic process, but national interests must remain above personal or political ambitions.
According to the president, Somalia’s recent achievements in areas such as security reforms, strengthening government institutions, expanding international partnerships, and improving economic opportunities have sometimes faced resistance from groups with different political interests.
“Building a country that has gone through decades of conflict is not an easy task. There will always be supporters and critics, but what matters is protecting Somalia’s unity, stability, and future,” he said.
President Hassan Sheikh called on Somali leaders and citizens to engage in constructive dialogue and ensure that political competition does not undermine national progress. He stressed that criticism should contribute to improvement rather than create division or instability.
Somalia continues to face significant challenges, including the fight against Al-Shabaab militants, security sector reforms, political disagreements, and the need to strengthen governance institutions. Despite these obstacles, the government says it remains committed to advancing state-building efforts and creating a more stable future for the country.
The president said Somalia’s long-term success will depend on the ability of its people and political leadership to work together, prioritize national interests, and build a country based on peace, stability, and sustainable development.
