DAR ES SALAAM — China and Tanzania have agreed to expand cooperation in cardiac healthcare through the planned expansion of the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute.
Under the agreement, the institute will receive a new 100-bed facility, research laboratories and additional administrative space, expanding its capacity to provide specialised cardiac services.
A Chinese medical team has also supported the institute by donating medical supplies and providing specialist services. According to the information provided, the team has performed nearly 2,000 surgeries since April 2026.
The expanded facility is expected to strengthen Tanzania’s capacity for cardiac treatment, medical research and specialist healthcare services while deepening health cooperation between Tanzania and China.
The project forms part of broader cooperation between the two countries in the healthcare sector, with a focus on improving access to specialised medical services and strengthening local healthcare capacity.
