MOGADISHU — Somali political commentators have highlighted growing pressure on both Somalia and Ethiopia, arguing that the two countries may have increasing incentives to avoid confrontation and pursue cooperation amid wider regional tensions.
Speaking during the Kalsan & Hassan Bariise program, commentator Hassan Sheikh said President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is facing pressure over Ethiopia’s position toward Somalia, while Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is also confronting pressure from armed groups and internal political and security challenges.
“President Hassan Sheikh is feeling pressure. At a minimum, if Ethiopia does not support Somalia, it should refrain from interfering. At the same time, Abiy Ahmed is facing pressure from armed groups being pushed into Ethiopia. They have therefore reached an understanding: Can we remain together and coexist?” Hassan Sheikh said.
The discussion also examined the role of regional powers in Somalia’s political affairs. The program alleged that Puntland, Jubbaland and Somaliland have been among the Somali actors through which the United Arab Emirates has sought to expand its political influence in Somalia.
The comments come amid continuing tensions over Somalia’s federal political system, relations between Mogadishu and neighboring Ethiopia, and the involvement of regional powers in Somali political affairs.
The remarks represent the analysis and allegations presented by participants in the program. The claims regarding foreign involvement and political influence have not been independently verified.
