Somali Minister Meets UN Human Rights Official in Geneva

GENEVA — Somalia’s Minister of Family and Human Rights Development, Ambassador Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, held a meeting in Geneva with Ms. Awa Dabo, Deputy High Commissioner of the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the Federal Government of Somalia and the OHCHR, particularly in supporting Somalia’s efforts to promote and protect human rights.

The two sides also discussed ongoing efforts to establish an OHCHR office in Somalia. They emphasized the importance of such an office in strengthening national institutions, supporting human rights initiatives, and expanding technical cooperation between Somalia and the United Nations.

Minister Al-Makhzoumi thanked the OHCHR for its continued support and cooperation with the Somali government. She reaffirmed her ministry’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships and advancing efforts to promote and protect human rights across Somalia.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on ways to further strengthen cooperation and technical assistance in the human rights sector, with particular emphasis on building the capacity of national institutions and improving mechanisms for protecting human rights.

The minister was accompanied by the Ministry’s Director General, Mohamed Bashir Omar, as well as several experts and advisers from the Ministry of Family and Human Rights Development.
