MOGADISHU – Former Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has called for an independent investigation into the heavy casualties suffered by Somali National Army forces during recent fighting in Southwest State, particularly the latest clashes reported yesterday in the Buurhakaba district of Bay region.
In a press statement, Sharif expressed concern over the repeated losses suffered by government forces and demanded an independent investigation to establish accountability and identify those responsible for alleged military negligence.
“It is unfortunate that the repeated heavy casualties suffered by our forces continue to raise serious questions about the quality of operational planning, intelligence, military preparedness, and the independence of military command,” Sharif said.
He further emphasized the importance of protecting Somali soldiers, stating:
“The Somali National Army is the nation’s most valuable asset. The lives of Somali soldiers must never be gambled with or sacrificed to advance political ambitions or personal interests.”
Sharif also accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of failing to adequately consider the advice of experienced military commanders familiar with combat operations and battlefield conditions.
He further alleged that decisions concerning military welfare and promotions have negatively affected troop morale.
The former president concluded his statement with a four-point appeal, calling for investigations into the recurring military setbacks and the establishment of a national plan to provide proper care and support for wounded soldiers.
