Mogadishu — For the first time in 35 years, Somalia’s Federal Government has officially inaugurated the country’s first modern Media Satellite Teleport, marking a historic leap forward in national communication infrastructure and digital broadcasting.
The newly established teleport center—fully digital and technologically advanced—will enable Somalia’s National Media to broadcast a wide range of live programs via dedicated satellites.
This eliminates the long-standing dependence on foreign services to transmit national content, enhancing sovereignty and efficiency in the country’s media operations.
Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, Mr. Daud Aweys Jama, informed the Cabinet that the teleport facility can also serve various government institutions for secure communication and other strategic purposes.
During the weekly Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, the Council of Ministers praised the Ministry of Information for successfully implementing the high-tech Media Satellite Teleport, calling it a major milestone in upgrading the country’s broadcasting capabilities.
The Ministry emphasized that the project is part of a broader national strategy to expand digital media infrastructure, embrace technological advancement, and generate employment opportunities for Somalia’s youth.
Historically, Somalia had an analog teleport under the former national broadcasting authority, which was destroyed during the civil war over three decades ago. The new teleport signifies a significant return to self-reliance in media transmission and a critical step toward rebuilding state institutions and modern communication systems.
