Istanbul – The Federal Republic of Somalia and the Republic of Turkey have renewed and revised a key defense cooperation agreement, reinforcing their growing strategic partnership.
Somalia’s Minister of Defense, H.E. Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, and his Turkish counterpart, H.E. Yaşar Güler, signed the revised protocol today in Istanbul. The updated agreement modifies the implementation procedures of the original financial assistance deal signed between the two countries on July 17, 2019.
This renewed accord forms part of broader efforts to deepen the strategic alliance between Somalia and Turkey, particularly in the defense sector. It focuses on strengthening the Somali National Army (SNA) through improved training programs, military equipment support, and capacity building initiatives.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, Minister Fiqi emphasized that the revision and renewal of the agreement reflect the solid and growing relationship between Somalia and Turkey. He stressed the Somali Federal Government’s commitment to utilizing Turkey’s brotherly support in a transparent and effective manner, aligned with national interests.
The agreement is expected to further bolster Somalia’s efforts to rebuild and professionalize its armed forces, enhance national security, and foster long-term regional stability.
