Elite units of the Somali National Army’s Danab Commandos have launched a large-scale military operation in Leego, a strategic area in the Lower Shabelle region, as well as along the key highway linking the region to Bay.
The operation is aimed at securing the area and restricting the movements of members of the Al-Shabaab militant group, who are believed to occasionally take refuge in the surrounding areas.
As part of the mission, Danab forces have conducted extensive security checks on public transport vehicles and individuals traveling on the main roads, in an effort to ensure the safety of civilians living in the region.
In a brief statement, Somalia’s Ministry of Defense praised the courage and commitment of the Danab forces.
“The Ministry of Defense commends the bravery and dedication of Danab heroes who continue to stand firm in protecting civilians and ensuring national stability,” the statement read.
This operation forms part of a broader offensive targeting Al-Shabaab, carried out in collaboration with national forces and local allied militias.
However, despite earlier momentum, recent months have seen a slowdown in military gains, allowing the militant group to recapture key towns and villages, particularly in Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle regions. The latest to fall under their control is Moqokori, which remains in their hands.
While the Somali government has reaffirmed its commitment to defeating Al-Shabaab, with the support of its people and international partners, a significant counteroffensive to reclaim lost territories has yet to materialize.
