Mogadishu – The Federal Government of Somalia has deployed its largest-ever military force in preparation for a major offensive aimed at recapturing areas in the Middle Shabelle region still controlled by the militant group Al-Shabaab, with a special focus on the strategic town of Aadan Yabaal.

The newly deployed troops, showcased in the Garasweyne area, are described as highly trained and equipped with modern weaponry and gear. Officials say the force is specifically tasked with carrying out complex operations to restore security and re-establish government authority in key districts.

Military commanders leading the offensive announced that the mobilization marks the beginning of the second phase of the government’s campaign against Al-Shabaab. The operation’s objective is to liberate all territories in central Somalia still under militant control.

The upcoming offensive, expected to launch in the coming days, is part of a joint security strategy involving the Somali National Army, police forces, and local militia groups.

Aadan Yabaal, a district currently held by Al-Shabaab fighters, remains one of the last strategic strongholds in the region. The government hopes the operation will serve as a turning point in its ongoing efforts to secure the country.

This comes after Al-Shabaab captured it from the Somali government a few months ago, following a breakdown in coordination among the military leadership, which also led to Al-Shabaab taking control of the districts of Moqokori and Mahas in Hiraan province.
