Kismayo – The recent victory of Somali government forces in the strategic town of Beled-Hawo has marked the beginning of a major political shift in the southern state of Jubaland, spearheaded by Federal Minister of Internal Security Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag.

This plan, called “New Jubbaland”, reflects the wishes of the people of Jubaland – especially those from the Gedo region, and focuses on establishing an inclusive, consultative regional administration.

This move signals the beginning of the end for the 14-year rule of Ahmed Madobe, whose leadership has been largely confined to Kismayo.

General Fartaag, who is leading the inclusive governance efforts, has prioritized restoring essential public services such as roads, bridges, healthcare, and education—services that have been lacking in Jubaland for years. His vision is grounded in extensive consultations with local elders, women, intellectuals, and community leaders across the region.

Meanwhile, reports from Kismayo indicate that Jubaland authorities are mobilizing military forces in a bid to retake control of Beled-Hawo.
