Abyan — More than 60 migrants have died after a packed boat carrying approximately 150 people capsized off the southern coast of Yemen on Sunday amid rough weather conditions, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The tragedy occurred off the coast of Abyan Governorate, where authorities recovered the bodies of at least 68 people, the IOM confirmed in a statement to the BBC. The boat was reportedly carrying migrants—mainly from Ethiopia—attempting to cross from the Horn of Africa to the Arabian Peninsula in search of work and safety.

Only 12 survivors have been rescued so far, while dozens more remain missing, sparking a desperate search-and-rescue effort. Many of the victims are believed to be Ethiopian nationals, the IOM added, describing the incident as “deeply tragic.”

Yemen continues to be a key transit point for thousands of African migrants, despite its ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis. Every year, hundreds risk their lives in dangerous sea crossings, hoping to reach Gulf countries through Yemen’s shores.

The IOM estimates that hundreds of migrants have died or gone missing in similar sea disasters in recent months alone.

Humanitarian organizations are urging for increased international support and protection measures for migrants making these perilous journeys.
