Mogadishu – Armed confrontation loomed this morning in Mogadishu as heavily armed forces led by Member of Parliament Yaasiin Abdullahi Farey seized control of Siinay Market, a contested area where the government reportedly plans to carry out forced evictions and demolitions.
MP Yaasiin Farey, who represents residents in the area, arrived at the scene with military vehicles and troops, declaring his firm opposition to the government’s move. He publicly condemned the plan to forcibly evict people and demolish property, vowing to protect the rights of his constituents and defend the land against what he described as illegal government encroachment.
“The government will not be allowed to evict the people I represent or demolish their properties by force,” said MP Farey. “I will stand by them and defend this land from being grabbed.”
The forces aligned with MP Farey swiftly spread out and took strategic positions throughout parts of Siinay Market, blocking key access roads to prevent government troops from entering the area.
In response, government-aligned forces—including units from the elite Haramcad police and the military police—were deployed around Siinay Market.
Accompanied by bulldozers and other heavy machinery, they reportedly attempted to advance into the market to begin demolitions, sparking fears of armed clashes.
The standoff created panic among local residents and traders. Many began evacuating their homes and businesses as tension escalated, fearing a violent confrontation between the rival forces.
The situation remains volatile, with both sides maintaining a heavy military presence. Residents have expressed deep concern about the potential for bloodshed and the lack of a peaceful resolution to the dispute.
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the planned demolitions or the government’s broader intentions for the Siinay Market area.
