Arusha – Somalia has taken a significant step in its integration into the East African Community (EAC) by participating in the EAC Steering Committee Meeting held in Arusha, Tanzania, from August 4th to 6th, 2025.
The country was represented by Mr. Abdinasir Omar Katib, Director of the Department of Economic Development at the Ministry of Planning, Investment, and Economic Development.
The high-level meeting brought together senior officials and technical experts from EAC member states to deliberate and approve the draft of the 7th EAC Development Strategy (2026/2027–2030/2031).
This strategic document outlines the regional bloc’s future direction for economic growth, trade integration, and cross-border cooperation.
The strategy is expected to guide the EAC’s priorities over the next five years, focusing on deeper economic integration, infrastructure development, peace and security cooperation, and inclusive growth. It also aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Somalia’s active participation in the meeting reflects its growing commitment to regional cooperation since formally joining the EAC in 2023. The country’s delegation contributed to discussions on harmonizing development policies, boosting intra-regional trade, and enhancing connectivity among member states.
“This is a crucial opportunity for Somalia to align its national development agenda with the broader goals of the East African region,” said Mr. Katib. “As a new member of the EAC, Somalia is committed to contributing to and benefiting from shared prosperity, peace, and stability.”
Experts believe Somalia’s inclusion in EAC planning processes will open up more opportunities for economic partnerships, investment flows, and infrastructure support—especially in sectors like agriculture, fisheries, transport, and energy.
The final version of the 7th EAC Development Strategy is expected to be formally adopted later this year by the Heads of State Summit, setting the stage for implementation beginning in mid-2026.
