MOGADISHU – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Tuesday registered himself as a voter at one of the voter registration centers in Warta Nabadda District, marking a symbolic step towards the country’s long-awaited “one person, one vote” elections.
The president praised the National Electoral Commission for the progress made in organizing direct elections, describing it as a milestone in Somalia’s democratic journey. He urged all Somali citizens to take advantage of the registration period to secure their constitutional right to choose leaders they trust to guide the nation’s future.
“The National Electoral Commission and Boundaries Commission deserve appreciation. Holding a one person, one vote election in Somalia is a hope we have carried for many years, as stated in our provisional constitution,” President Mohamud said. “It is time for the Somali people to reclaim their decision-making power in electing their leaders—whether Members of Parliament at the federal or state level, the President of the nation, or state leadership.”
The president Hassan also commended the security forces, district authorities, and local communities actively involved in the voter registration process, noting that their responsible collaboration is essential for the smooth conduct of the elections.
Somalia has not held a direct nationwide vote for decades, with previous elections relying on clan-based delegate systems. The upcoming polls, if successful, will mark a historic shift towards universal suffrage in the country.
