CAPE TOWN – Somalia has joined continental leaders in Cape Town for the Africa Water Investment Summit, with a high-level delegation led by Second Deputy Prime Minister Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi pushing for stronger partnerships to tackle water scarcity and climate challenges.
The three-day summit, running from August 13 to 15, is co-hosted by the Government of South Africa, the African Union Chairperson, and the Global High-Level Panel on Water Investment for Africa. It aims to mobilize funding for water and sanitation projects critical to sustainable development across the continent.
The gathering brings together heads of state, ministers, development partners, and private sector leaders to accelerate progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 6—clean water and sanitation for all—while advancing the African Union’s Agenda 2063 vision.
With climate change intensifying droughts and water shortages, Somalia has placed water investment at the heart of its national development agenda, viewing it as essential for strengthening community resilience, spurring economic growth, and ensuring stability.
Deputy Prime Minister Jibril is also set to engage in bilateral talks with African leaders and international stakeholders to expand cooperation on water infrastructure and climate-resilient development across the region.
