MOGADISHU – Somalia’s President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has appointed Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur, widely known as “Americo,” as the new director of Mogadishu Port, in what is seen as a strategic move to boost efficiency and transparency at one of the country’s most vital economic hubs.

The government confirmed that Americo, Somalia’s former ambassador to Kenya, will replace Ahmed Washington, who was removed from the position. Officials say the leadership reshuffle is aimed at introducing fresh ideas and strengthening management systems to improve revenue collection and port services.

Ambassador Americo is a seasoned diplomat with extensive international experience. His new role is expected to focus on modernizing port operations, streamlining cargo handling, and reinforcing Somalia’s trade partnerships.

Analysts suggest that his diplomatic background could also play a key role in fostering stronger international cooperation and attracting investment to Somalia’s largest and busiest port, which serves as the backbone of the country’s import-export trade.

The Mogadishu Port is one of the government’s main sources of revenue, and authorities have repeatedly stressed the need for reforms to ensure accountability and to maximize economic benefits.

Business stakeholders and investors have welcomed the appointment with optimism, hoping that Americo’s leadership will pave the way for growth in maritime trade and broader economic development in Somalia.
