Lasanod – The Parliament of Somalia’s Northeast State has elected a new speaker following a closely contested vote. Dr. Adan Abdullahi Aw Ali emerged victorious with 53 votes, defeating his rival, MP Dheliye, who secured 29 votes.

The election, described as highly competitive and spirited, saw full participation from lawmakers.
Observers noted that Dr. Adan’s victory was largely influenced by the strong backing he received from Northeast State leader Abdulqadir Firdhiye, while his opponent enjoyed the support of other influential members of parliament.
Despite the fierce contest, the outcome clearly demonstrated the confidence of the parliamentary majority in Dr. Adan, paving the way for him to take up the role of speaker.
The new speaker now faces a series of critical tasks, including:
• Unifying the parliament after a heated election,
• Drafting and passing essential legislation for the state’s governance,
• And strengthening the relationship between the federal government and Northeast State.
In a related development, former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo extended his congratulations to Dr. Adan on his election, expressing hope that the new leadership will help advance stability and effective governance in the region.
