ANKARA – Turkey has announced that it is cutting all trade relations with Israel and has closed its airspace to Israeli aircraft, a move that underscores the sharp deterioration in ties between the two nations.

The decision, confirmed by Ankara on Friday, represents one of the strongest punitive measures Turkey has taken against Israel in recent years. Turkish officials said the step was taken in response to Israel’s “destabilizing actions” in the region, which they claim are fueling insecurity and undermining peace across the Middle East.

“Israel has chosen a path that destabilizes the entire region. Turkey cannot remain silent while such policies threaten peace and stability,” the Turkish government said in a statement.

Turkey and Israel, once close economic and security partners, have seen relations fluctuate for decades, largely strained over Israel’s military campaigns in Gaza and broader Palestinian issues. Tensions have periodically escalated, with Ankara frequently criticizing Israel’s treatment of Palestinians and military operations that have resulted in high civilian casualties.

The two countries exchange billions of dollars in goods annually, with Turkey exporting textiles, construction materials, and food products, while importing Israeli technology and agricultural produce.
