MOGADISHU – Somalia’s Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport, Abdulqadir Mohamed Noor, announced today that the new Mogadishu Port will have an annual handling capacity of 1.2 million TEUs, positioning it as one of the largest ports in Africa.

A TEU, or “Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit,” is the standard international measure for shipping containers. According to the minister, the new port will be able to handle over 1.2 million containers annually, a significant leap compared to the existing Mogadishu Port, which currently processes around 150,000 TEUs per year.
“This represents a major milestone for Somalia’s maritime infrastructure and will allow the new port to compete with leading ports across the region,” Minister Noor said.
He also highlighted that the port development, along with the Special Economic Zone, a new airport, and commercial hubs, forms part of the government’s broader strategy to modernize Somalia into a regional trade and logistics hub. The plan aims to boost commerce, attract foreign investment, and create new employment opportunities.
Minister Noor further urged Saudi Arabia and international investors to participate in Somalia’s infrastructure development, emphasizing the country’s growing investment opportunities, particularly in ports, airports, and commercial centers.
He stressed that the new port is a key element in strengthening Somalia’s economic infrastructure, enhancing trade and cargo movement, and connecting the country more effectively with global markets.
Despite historical challenges, the minister affirmed that Somalia is now on a tangible path toward economic progress and modern development.
