ADDIS ABABA – Jawar Mohammed, a prominent Ethiopian politician and vocal critic of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government, has raised concerns over potential military tensions involving the ruling Prosperity Party (PP). According to Jawar, the ruling party held meetings this week in Ethiopia’s Somali and Oromia regions, signaling preparations for a possible conflict related to Eritrea’s Assab port.

Jawar claimed that government employees in these regions were informed that any military operations would commence following the official inauguration of Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam (GERD).
The dam’s inauguration is scheduled for September 9, when Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is expected to preside over the ceremony. High-profile African leaders attending the African Climate Summit in Addis Ababa are also anticipated to be present during the event.
Jawar’s statements highlight rising political tensions in Ethiopia, where opposition voices have increasingly criticized the government’s approach to regional security and foreign relations. Analysts say that the Assab port, located in neighboring Eritrea, is of strategic importance for Ethiopia, especially for trade and access to international waters, making it a sensitive point in the Horn of Africa’s geopolitics.
The Prosperity Party has not yet responded publicly to Jawar’s claims. However, observers note that the announcement comes amid growing domestic debates over Ethiopia’s ambitious infrastructure projects and the role of the military in securing national interests.
As Ethiopia prepares for the high-profile GERD inauguration, international attention will likely focus on both the economic symbolism of the dam and the potential security challenges in the region.
