LONDON – The United Kingdom has announced plans to impose travel restrictions on countries that refuse to repatriate their citizens, UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said on Tuesday.

Speaking in London, Secretary Mahmood emphasized that the UK government is committed to ensuring that all individuals currently residing in the country who are not entitled to remain are returned to their home countries in line with international law and UK immigration regulations.

“We will take strong measures against countries that deny responsibility for their citizens. Travel restrictions and other diplomatic steps will be considered to ensure compliance,” she stated.

The announcement comes amid increasing concerns over foreign nationals who have overstayed their visas or are subject to deportation but whose countries of origin have refused to provide the necessary travel documents.

UK officials indicated that a list of non-cooperative countries is being prepared and that sanctions could include restrictions on official travel, limitations on trade negotiations, and other diplomatic measures.

Secretary Mahmood stressed that the measures are aimed at governments, not individuals, and are intended to encourage countries to fulfill their obligations under international agreements regarding their nationals abroad.

The UK government has repeatedly called on countries to facilitate the safe and timely return of their citizens to prevent prolonged legal and humanitarian challenges within the UK.
