NAIROBI, (HAN) – Somalia’s Dekedaha FC kicked off their CAF campaign with a vital 1-0 win against Sudan’s Alzamala Sports Club in a thrilling encounter held at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium.
The highly anticipated match drew a large crowd of Somali fans from across Nairobi and beyond, with notable dignitaries in attendance, including the Director of Mogadishu Port, who praised supporters for turning out in large numbers.
The first half ended goalless despite Dekedaha creating several key chances. After the break, team captain Aweys Aadan Iimaan, popularly known as “Xaaji,” netted the decisive goal, sparking wild celebrations among players and fans alike.
Among the spectators was Ahmed Maxamed Cali Axmed “Taajr,” who traveled from Ireland to witness the historic match. He urged the Somali Football Federation to give closer attention to Dekedaha’s head coach, Cabdiraxmaan Xaashi Xuseen, who has guided the team impressively.
Speaking after the win, captain Aweys and coach Cabdiraxmaan hailed the victory as a proud moment for all Somalis. Club chairman Yaxye Sheekh Nuur, however, reminded players to stay focused, with the return leg scheduled for next Saturday.
Mogadishu Port Director Maxamed Cali Nuur “Americo,” who attended the match to motivate the team, congratulated the players and called on the Somali diaspora to continue their strong support.
“This is a historic victory for all Somalis. I thank the community for standing behind the team, and I urge everyone to turn out in large numbers for the second leg,” Americo said, further pledging rewards for the players as promised before the game.
